There are 2 graphic novels from the erotic artist Milo Manara that tell stories drawn from history:
- the Borgia series, about the family of the Rodrigo Borgia, the Pope Alexander VI, in the XV century;
- and "El Gaucho", about the history of Argentina and the southern part of South America in the XIX century.
Manara's art is appealing to the eyes, with smooth and delicate lines, and watercolor. However, both works have strong subjects that contrast with this soft appearance: physical and sexual violence, fight for wealth and power, betrayal, conspiracy.
The erotic atmosphere is very appropriate to both stories: there were many polemic romances inside the Borgia family and sexual abuses during the wars for freedom and independence in Argentina and the rest of South America.
